This week at Massabesic Middle School, 7th graders completed a unit called “Wabanaki Week”, where students’ learned about the history and culture of Abenaki, Mi'kmaq, Maleceet, Passamaquoddy and Penobscot Nations. Students celebrated their learning with a performance from Penobscot performer, Firefly - who shared about the rich history of his home on Indian Island in Old Town, and performed several Wabanaki songs of welcome, honor, and strength. Firefly was joined by his wife, Donna, who led our students’ in traditional dances, including the “round dance”. Several 7th graders were even invited to join Firefly on stage and perform with him! A great big thank you to Firefly and Donna for their incredible performance, and to Ms. Jordyn Chase who was instrumental in making today’s event happen! Lyman Elementary students in Miss Sundik's Kindergarten Class had the opportunity to dissect Owl Pellets as a part of their K for ME Animal Unit. These little scientists explored the prey of Owls first hand and sorted bones of birds and rodents.

Massabesic High School Students are gearing up for the SeaPerch Challenge with the invaluable support of Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. Generously providing kits with materials, tools, and instruction booklets, as well as volunteer guidance, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard has empowered 24 students on 7 teams, to construct their own Remote Operated Vehicles (ROVs). Scott Swett, a technical education teacher at MHS, highlighted the unique hands-on experience that challenges students to build ROVs from scratch, fostering skills like soldering, drilling, measuring, and troubleshooting. These students will soon put their creations to the test, and one outstanding team will represent Massabesic High School at the 2024 Seacoast SeaPerch Challenge on April 5 at the University of New Hampshire. The challenge includes navigating obstacle courses, executing recovery missions, and presenting technical reports; providing students with a platform to practice deep thinking and problem-solving skills. NJROTC instructor Captain Douglas Howell emphasized his role as a student guide, encouraging critical thinking and hands-on learning in an environment where there's "no illusion that the teacher knows all." RSU 57 invites all to support these aspiring engineers and innovators during the SeaPerch Challenge. Good luck, Mustangs!
