Dear RSU57 families & staff:

In case you were not already aware, Maine Schools have been alerted to a harmful social media trend that seems specific to TikTok in 2021. In recent days, there have been general posts across the nation on TikTok and other platforms stating that on Friday, December 17, there is a challenge to call in bomb threats, school shooting threats, etc. at schools throughout the United States. These posts did not originate from our area, are not specific to Maine Schools, and create an extreme challenge for staff, students, and the community.
We have collaborated with local law enforcement partners, and they are increasing their presence in the community in support of students.

As of this writing, there have been no local, credible threats.

Social media is prevalent in the lives of most of our youngsters.  It is a powerful tool that can be used to influence and disrupt.  I ask for parents’ help in remaining vigilant when monitoring students’ online interactions, and to carry an awareness of these kinds of threats.  Please take time to counsel your child(ren) about the influence of social media, and the potential consequences of engaging in these destructive social media trends.
As always, thank you for your support of our schools.

Sincerely,
Larry Malone
Superintendent of Schools
