Cadet Weisenbach with Commander Humphreys

On November 14, Massabesic High School's Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) underwent a rigorous Area Manager Inspection (AMI), a key event in the program's calendar. The inspection aimed to ensure the program's effectiveness and support, with insights from students highlighting the dedication and success of the RSU 57 NJROTC program.

Conducted by NJROTC Development Area Two Manager Commander Eric Humphreys (Ret.), the AMI plays a crucial role in validating the NJROTC program's effectiveness. The area manager conducts inspections annually, evaluating everything from program operations to cadet grooming. This inspection is a comprehensive evaluation that ensures the program's effectiveness in developing future leaders and promoting good citizenship.

Interviews with four Massabesic High School students provided valuable insights into the preparation for the inspection. Seniors Brayden Emerson and Sarah Stevens, both with four years of NJROTC experience, discussed the significant learning curves of preparing for major unit events, including how to plan, coordinate, and communicate effectively with others. Freshmen Isabella Deshaies and Ethan Valliere noted that cadets spend countless hours practicing during and after school as well as studying for the oral portion of the inspection.

Instructors Captain Douglas Howell and Chief Joseph Lipp have been instrumental in preparing the cadets for the AMI. Both shared their perspectives on the importance of the inspection, emphasizing that NJROTC goes beyond military service. Chief Lipp highlights the program's focus on leadership, teaching cadets to be leaders by first being good followers.

Chief Lipp and Captain Howell expressed that the most memorable aspect of the AMI was the overwhelming support from families and community members. The bleachers filled with supporters during a school day left a lasting impression on both instructors and the area manager, underscoring the community's backing for the cadets.

Captain Howell identified key factors contributing to the success of the NJROTC program at RSU 57. The dedication of experienced students, coupled with the faith and confidence of first-year cadets, has created a culture of constant improvement. Additionally, the unwavering support from the school environment, district administration, teachers, and the community has allowed cadets to think without barriers and be bold in their pursuits.

The NJROTC Area Manager Inspection at Massabesic High School serves as a testament to the commitment, leadership, and community support that define the program's success.
