Attention Lyman Families, please fill out the survey linked below about Early Release Days.
https://forms.gle/poCxHtfTNNZ6bkaY7
Dear Families,
The District is considering reinstating its early release days this January - May. This would mean 7 early release days on the following Wednesdays: 01/13; 02/3; 03/03; 03/24; 04/07; 05/05; 05/26.
The Elementary Schools would release early at about 1:15PM. And, the Middle and High Schools would release early at about noon. Before doing so, we would like to understand how this will impact your family in these unique times.
Transportation will be for those who currently ride buses.
The primary purpose for this time is the same as in previous years - to work with teachers in supporting the educational needs of your children. Given the unique demands of the times, this professional time is especially important for our teachers.
School lunch would be served either on site or as a "grab and go" on these days. Remote learning families would continue to access school lunch by way of curbside pick up.

We will place these same materials outside of the school for pick-up for remote students starting today. They can be picked up until 6pm, please avoid drop off and pick up times. We look forward to a great family night.

On October 9th the USDA announced the extension of free meals to all children 18 and under through the end of the 2020-2021 school year!
Free meals consist of breakfast and lunch and must be a complete reimbursable meal in order to meet federal guidelines. Enrolled, in-person learners may receive free meals while attending school in-person. Remote learners, home schooled children, and any child 18 and under that is not of school age may pre-order meals for pick up by submitting the following form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdADGQNbsN3SNxOr23avHOMyeoo-sw39h5Nq6C0bTgL57MERg/viewform?usp=sf_link
RSU 57 highly recommends that all households continue to submit free and reduced applications for meal price benefits if you feel you may qualify. Each school district receives federal and state funding based on the percentage of students that are approved for free or reduced meal prices. Under counting those eligible for this program could harm many educational programs we rely on to serve our students. Regardless of whether your student chooses to receive school meals or not, it is critical that we properly account for all who are eligible.
If you have any questions related to free meals, meal price benefit applications or remote meal pick up please contact the School Nutrition Department directly by calling (207)247-3221 x2257 or emailing vanessarichardson@rsu57.org

Attention Lyman and Alfred Gr. 1-5 Remote learners: Our first day is tomorrow! Please log in to Zoom at 9:15am. If you have any questions, reach out to your child’s teacher via email. We can’t wait to see you on zoom!

In order to decrease the amount of meal payments being handled by students and staff, we encourage all families to sign up for our online payment system. For more information on this service please visit the document section on our website. Documents>Information>School Nutrition
Did you know... that you can earn one free bonus meal when you deposit $50.00 or more onto a student meal account. For example, a payment of $50 will be charged a fee of $2.49, but in return you will receive one bonus meal on the student meal account. The value of the meal exceeds the value of the fee. Bonus meals are automatically applied at lunch once earned.

Maine's Department of Health and Human Services has received approval from Food and Nutrition Services to partner with the Maine Department of Education to provide a Pandemic EBT (P-EBT) benefit to school-aged children who normally receive free or reduced breakfast and lunch at Maine schools. This benefit will help to replace the value of school meals while students are learning remotely. Families currently receiving SNAP or TANF and have a child aged five through eighteen will receive a P-EBT benefit on their Pine Tree card in May. Families who are not receiving SNAP or TANF and have a child who is eligible for free or reduced school lunch can request the P-EBT benefit by calling 1-855-797-4357. Some household information will be requested by a phone agent who will then verify eligibility with the Maine Department of Education. Families who have not yet been found eligible for free or reduced lunch can apply through their local school district at the following link. www.myschoolapps.com Separate P-EBT cards will be issued for eligible families who do not already have a Pine Tree card.
Please call our office if you cannot access the online application and we will mail you a paper copy. (207)247-3221 x2257

A message from our music teacher! I'm so excited to share another song with Alfred and Lyman elementary schoolers! This song is Count On Me by Bruno Mars. I will be posting a new song every week on my channel, so be sure to check it out! I miss you all, and I can't wait until we're making music together again!

In addition to the two open meal sites at Line Elementary and Massabesic Middle School, we will be implementing a free meal delivery service via specific bus routes starting on Monday, March 23rd. These bus routes have been set up to bring food to the areas in our communities with the highest need. In order to keep the meals as safe as possible and to allow time for staff to safely prepare the meals, we will be doing two deliveries per day. One delivery in the morning for breakfast and one delivery in the afternoon for lunch. The bus routes will run Monday through Friday. Please visit the RSU 57 website or app to access the route map and approximate delivery times. Students will have the option to receive breakfast and lunch each day and on Fridays they will receive two additional meals for the weekend.
Our focus is to get meals closer to the students in our district that desperately need them. If your student is in need of meals and you cannot access the daily bus routes or the open meal sites please call 207-247-3221 x2257 and we will do our very best to assist you.
The meals available through our two meal sites as well as our specific area bus routes are available to all children 18 and under, free of charge. We want to be able to offer all children in our district the nutrition they need during this closure. In order to continue doing so, we do ask that only families that are in high need receive these meals. We will continue this service as long as our food supply and staffing needs can meet the demand.

Nutrition Update

Lyman Elementary had 98% of our take home packets picked up today! Thank you parents for valuing education and helping us while we navigate this uncharted territory. I am so amazing and proud of our staff who gave up their practice online day to be at the school and help get the packets out to cars. I feel so fortunate to work in this community!

On December 2nd, the fifth graders will begin collecting food and other items for the shelter. More information to come!

Mrs. Richard’s 4th grade class from Lyman had Dr. Goldman visit and talk about biomedical engineers, he explained how he uses what the engineers invent . He also showed us how the heart works and explained how engineers have designed many devices to help people over the years. Some devices have even helped a paraplegic person walk! This lesson with Dr. Goldman was to help enhance students understanding of our current science unit. The students will be designing and working on ways to improve their designs just as engineers have done.
